Dutch is a West Germanic language with similarities to German and English, and the official language of the Netherlands and associated territories. It is also the mother tongue of the majority of the population of Belgium, which was previously part of the Netherlands. Belgium is the official headquarters of both the EU and NATO.
Dutch is a first language for about 23 million people. The Dutch dialects of Southern Africa are now standardised into Afrikaans, which is a mutually intelligible off-shoot of Dutch, and is spoken by about 15 to 20 million people in South Africa and Namibia.
Despite a substantial colonial presence, the language of windmills is not spoken much in its ex-colonies – although it is argued that 20% of Indonesian words are rooted in Dutch.
